Webcams on the Move

If you want to use your webcam in more than one location, or even whilst on the move, then much webcam-specific equipment might not be suitable. If you are already transporting a laptop or other computer device, then it is unlikely that you will want to pack an additional webcam. Whilst traditional webcam devices are usually find when lift in a fixed position, they can often prove too bulky for frequent transportation.

However, many webcam users may have already invested in a smartphone or tablet device. These days, there is a huge range available from providers such as O2, a great many of which actually offer webcam facilities. However, it can be difficult to know what standard of picture streaming to expect when using these devices as a webcam, and even how to update your current software to accommodate such features.

One of the easiest devices to use as a webcam is probably the iPhone, which simply required the straightforward installation an app. WebCamera, by SHAPE Services, is suitable for the iPhone iOS 4.0 (or later) as well as the iPad, and works in conjunction with Skype, Yahoo!, Windows Live Messenger, AIM – to name but a few. This particular webcam also offer video streaming on three different resolutions 192×144, 480×360, and 1280×720, giving you some control over your picture quality.

Another extremely popular Android smartphone is the Samsung Galaxy S and, fortunately, this is another device through which it is relatively straightforward to access webcam facilities. DroidCam Wireless Webcam is one of the best options on the app market, although it requires Windows and Linux operating systems to also work in conjunction with your PC. DroidCam can be downloaded for free, but if you’re looking for a high quality version (which also features a number of other improvements), then you may wanted to consider paying out for the slightly advanced DroidCam.
